Objectives

1. To explain the stages of the decontamination process as identified in the HTM 01-05 guidance document and to discuss how key environmental legislation applies to dentistry

2. To provide training and education in exposure to blood-borne viruses and infection risk reduction, so as to teach learners how to comply with the blood-borne training requirement of HTM 01-05

3. To provide information about legionella and Legionnaire’s disease, and how to safely maintain dental unit waterlines

4. To discuss the safe management of healthcare waste in the dental sector as specified in the HTM 01-07 guidance document

This course is suitable for the entire practice team.

Dr Martin Fulford BDS MPHIL DGDP FIBMS, GDC 61504 spent 13 years in medical microbiology before qualifying as a dentist. He then combined general dental practice and research, with particular emphasis on infection control, before retiring from clinical dentistry 17 years later. Martin has published numerous peer reviewed papers and a textbook on infection control in dentistry. He is currently a member of an ISO working group on microbial contamination in dental unit waterlines and lectures worldwide on the prevention and control of infections in the dental setting.

Describe the risks from infectious diseases in dentistry and the infection control guidance contained in HTM 01-05, so as to prevent physical, chemical and microbiological contamination in the practice of dentistry

Outline effective strategies for safely maintaining dental unit waterlines, so as to prevent or control the risks associated with legionella

Summarise the key issues relating to waste disposal in dental practice, so as to assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement
