| Description | The aims of this course are to: 1. Build delegates’ knowledge of employment law affecting dental practices. |
| Additional information | 2. Develop the GDPs’ ability to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting (adults and paediatrics), so as to deal quickly with uncommon but potentially tragic events. This theory course meets the annual GDC requirements for CPD in medical emergencies and follows the UK Resuscitation Council guidelines in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Immediate Life Support (ILS). Objectives: • To examine associate contracts and other financial, business and contractual aspects of employment law affecting dental professionals and practices • To illustrate principles of staff recruitment and employment law using practice employment policies and procedures • To provide training in how to perform an urgent care assessment of an ill patient • To outline processes and procedures to recognise, manage, (and where required, provide) basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies • To explain the team approach to medical emergencies and outline the emergency drugs and equipment that should be held by dental surgeries. This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Foundation Training by Equivalence. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this essential one day course. Abalene Odell is a Practice Management Consultant in the BDA’s Practice Support Team. Abalene advises general dental practitioners on associate contracts and a wide range of employment and other law. She is an experienced Human Resources professional, with years of experience advising businesses on recruiting staff and getting the best from its workforce. Jane Carter joined the NHS in 1992 and worked for Hampshire Ambulance Service (now South Central) as a Paramedic. In 1999 she joined Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust where she worked as a Resuscitation Officer for 13 years. As a Resuscitation Officer, Jane was an Advanced Life Support Provider, European Paediatric Life Support Provider and Immediate Life Support Provider and Instructor. Jane is still registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (PA15948) and is co-director of Carterdavies - a Professional First Aid Training company that specialises in delivering training to Dental and GP surgeries. Jane gained her Certificate in Education in 2007 with the University of Portsmouth. |
