DescriptionThe aim of this course is to overview key aspects of infection prevention and control for the whole dental team. Requirements of the GDC and CQC will be met by this course.
Additional informationObjectives:
1. To explain the stages of the decontamination process as identified in the HTM 01-05 guidance document.
2. To examine the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss how key environmental legislation applies to dentistry.
3. To provide training and education in exposure to blood-borne viruses and infection risk reduction, so as to teach learners how to comply with the blood-borne training requirement of HTM 01-05.
4. To provide information about legionella and Legionnaire’s disease, and how to safely maintain dental unit waterlines.
5. To discuss the safe management of healthcare waste in the dental sector as specified in the HTM 01-07 guidance document.
This course is intended for the entire practice team.

Martin Fulford. GDC 61504
Originally trained as a microbiologist and spent 13 years as a practical medical microbiologist. Retrained as a dentist in his mid thirties and then spent 17 years working as a general dental practitioner. During this time he managed to combine clinical dentistry with research, mainly in the field of infection control. He has recently completed a thesis entitled: ‘Microbial Contamination of Dental Unit Water Systems in General Dental Practice’. Although now retired from clinical practice he is still active in research and is currently part of a team investigating the possibility of the transmission of vCJD via contaminated dental instruments. Martin is also a member of the Health and Science Committee, with a particular interest in infection control, of the British Dental Association
