| Description | This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an Introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Dental Foundation Training by Equivalence (DFTQ). This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this training. |

| Aims | Overall aim: To provide an overview of the NHS General Dental Services Contract in England and the management of the medically compromised patient. Specific aims: 1. To build understanding of the different remuneration systems for dental services. 2. To provide a critical overview of the clinical pathway approach. 3. To increase practitioners' ability to assess the influence of systemic diseases and other disabilities, and associated treatments, on oral health and the delivery of dental care. |
| Objectives | 1. To explain the structure of the NHS in England in the context of dentistry. 2. To explain the charging structure relating to treatment provided for patients in general practice and other relevant clinical environments, including NHS dentistry, private fee per item and capitation schemes. 3. To analyse the clinical pathway approach. 4. To discuss management of the medically compromised patient in the primary care setting. 5. To examine aspects of general medicine and surgery of relevance to the practice of dentistry. |
| Learning outcomes | Following this course learners should be able to: 1. Demonstrate ability in the decision-making process, so as to comply consistently with NHS General Dental Services Contract Regulations. 2. Describe and summarise the charging structures in dentistry, including the weightings used to convert Courses of Treatment into Units of Dental Activity, so as to apply the correct costings every time. 3. Use the clinical pathway to provide patients with a preventive care plan indicating their risk, so as to assist in the transfer of responsibility for patient self-care. 4. Describe in appropriate detail aspects relating to local and general anaesthesia, sedation, pain and anxiety control for managing the medically compromised/older patient in the primary care setting. 5. Recognise aspects of general medicine and surgery which impact the delivery of dental treatment. |
