DescriptionStaff who have any contact with children should receive child protection training every 3 years as a minimum. The aim of this course is to meet this requirement and clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in promoting the safety and well-being of children at risk of abuse. Requirements of the GDC and CQC will be met by this course.
Additional informationObjectives:
1. To provide information about the different forms of child abuse and neglect , including what constitutes child maltreatment
2. To discuss how to be an advocate for a child or young person
3. To explain the potential impact of a parent/carer’s physical and mental health on the well-being and development of a child or young person, including possible speech, language and communication needs
4. To explain the impact of domestic violence, the risks associated with the internet and online social networking, the importance of children’s rights in the safeguarding/child protection context, and key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation
5. To provide training in best practice in documentation and record-keeping, and data protection issues relating to information sharing for safeguarding purposes


-Jo Russell RDN Cert DPM Cert Ed MIfL LCGI, GDC 109492 - Director Oracle Practice Business Solutions, has worked in dentistry since 1986, including 7 years in the Royal Naval Dental Service, 2 years as an Area Manager for a large corporate looking after 16 practices across London and the South, and as a tutor, assessor and internal verifier for dental nurses undertaking formal qualification. Latterly she has spent much of her time delivering the level 4 Diploma in Dental Practice Management and business consultancy services for CQC compliance. Jo is a popular and enthusiastic speaker about all aspects of the business of dentistry and continuing professional development for the whole team.

Aims
  1. Recognise and outline the different forms of child maltreatment, and the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, so as to identify when a child or young person may be at risk of harm
  2. Demonstrate ability to use referral mechanisms and share information appropriately, including who to contact, where to access advice and how to report
  3. Demonstrate an ability to recognise and describe a significant event in child protection/safeguarding to the most appropriate professional or local team
  4. Use case scenarios to illustrate disclosure and information sharing, and accurate documentation of concerns
