DescriptionThe overall aim of this course is to improve learners’ management and leadership skills.
Additional informationObjectives:
• To discuss key result areas and responsibilities of a practice manager in primary dental care
• To explore the skills and behaviours that contribute to being an effective practice manager
• To examine some key leadership styles and their impact
• To explore differences between leadership and management
• To review the GDC standards of conduct, performance and ethics that govern dental professionals.

This course is suitable for practice managers.

Leanne Covey RDN Cert Ed BA (Hons) MIfL LCGI, GDC No 107996 has worked in the NHS for 20 years and was appointed DCP Tutor and Practice Facilitator for Portsmouth 8 years ago. She gained an Honours degree in Education and Training from the University of Portsmouth in July 2008, and since then has mentored dental nurse tutors across the region in successful pursuit of their Cert Ed. Leanne is currently supporting dental professionals and dental practices across Hampshire with their continuing professional development and the business of dentistry.

Aims
  1. Outline the typical work activities of a practice manager, so as to be aware of and adhere to role’s leadership and management responsibilities
  2. Describe the qualifications, skills, experience, knowledge and other attributes which a practice manager must possess to perform the job duties
  3. Describe own leadership qualities, so as to identify current position and opportunities for further development of self and team
  4. Demonstrate ability to provide leadership and management by outlining effective strategies for practice to meet its aim and objectives within a profitable, efficient, safe and effective working environment, while maintaining a happy and committed team
  5. Describe and summarise the key issues relating to conduct, performance and ethics, in accordance with GDC Standards, professionally relevant laws and ethical guidance, so as to meet the GDC’s 9 core ethical principles of practice at all times
