DescriptionThe overall aim of this course is to build an understanding of governance in dentistry, the regulatory framework of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and selection criteria for orthodontic referral.
Additional informationObjectives:
• To provide information about the standards and behaviours that apply to dentists and primary care – professional, regulatory, NHS, legal and local standards, clinical and professional conduct - and the implications of non-compliance
• To explore the current systems and structures of accountability and governance for health in the NHS in England
• To provide information on key issues surrounding the CQC’s role in regulating the dental profession, and the implications of not meeting the requirements of the regulations
• To explain the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and selection criteria for orthodontic referral.

This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Foundation Training by Equivalence. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this essential one day course.

Jo Russell RDN Cert DPM Cert Ed MIfL LCGI, GDC 109492 - Director Oracle Practice Business Solutions, has worked in dentistry since 1986, including 7 years in the Royal Naval Dental Service, 2 years as an Area Manager for a large corporate looking after 16 practices across London and the South, and as a tutor, assessor and internal verifier for dental nurses undertaking formal qualification. Latterly she has spent much of her time delivering the level 4 Diploma in Dental Practice Management and business consultancy services for CQC compliance. Jo is a popular and enthusiastic speaker about all aspects of the business of dentistry and continuing professional development for the whole team.

Dr Manish Chitnis BDS, IQE, MFGDP RCS Eng MFDS RCPS Glasgow, GDC 102053, has been in general dental practice for 17 years and is a hands-on Practice Owner in Hampshire. Manish holds a Certificate in Business Management Skills in Dentistry and has a particular interest in Clinical Governance, lecturing on this topic at postgraduate level. Manish is a Clinical Advisor for a Dental Corporate, a Training Programme Director – Foundation Training by Equivalence (FTE), and also a FTE Trainer.

Aims
  1. Describe the key elements of clinical governance, NHS quality improvement systems and GDC Standards for the Dental Team, so as to fully participate in own practice’s compliance
  2. Outline effective strategies to deliver key aspects of good governance in primary care dentistry, so as to ultimately lead to good outcomes for patients, the public and clinicians
  3. List the CQC’s five key lines of enquiry and illustrate how the requirements of the regulations can be met, so as to ensure own service does not fall below acceptable levels
  4. Use IOTN to refer patients for specialist orthodontic treatment appropriately and within needed time frames
