| Description | The overall aim of this course is to increase the GDPs’ ability to assess the influence of systemic diseases and other disabilities, and associated treatment, on oral health and the delivery of dental treatment. A specific aim is to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting (adults and paediatrics), so as to deal quickly with uncommon but potentially tragic events. |
| Additional information | Objectives: • To update and develop knowledge of the medically compromised/older patient, and examine aspects of general medicine and surgery which are of relevance to dental practice • To outline the oral complications of commonly prescribed drugs and suggest strategies for improving oral health in medicated patients • To explain the limitations, risks and benefits of using local analgesia techniques, general anaesthesia and sedation, including appropriate referral where necessary, for the medically compromised/older patient • To provide information about current guidance on good dental prescribing practice • To outline processes and procedures to recognise, manage, and where required provide, basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies, in line with guidelines from the UK Resuscitation Council. This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Foundation Training by Equivalence. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this essential one day course. James Wise BDS (Lond) LDS RCS (Eng) MFGDP (UK) MGDS RCS (Eng) FFGDP (UK), GDC 56232 is a GDP with an expansive CV - 6 years as a Board Member for the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), Divisional and National Seat; Vice Chair FGDP (UK) Finance Committee, past Chair External Affairs Committee, past Vice Chair External Affairs, Examinations; Member BSGDS; Part-time Private Practice (own); Postgraduate Lecturer for 4 Deaneries; Examiner for the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology and Tutor for Diploma in Restorative Dentistry FGDP (UK). He is passionate about dentistry and his interests include removable prosthodontics, dental technology, restorative dentistry and teaching. Jane Carter joined the NHS in 1992 and worked for Hampshire Ambulance Service (now South Central) as a Paramedic. In 1999 she joined Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust where she worked as a Resuscitation Officer for 13 years. As a Resuscitation Officer, Jane was an Advanced Life Support Provider, European Paediatric Life Support Provider and Immediate Life Support Provider and Instructor. Jane is still registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (PA15948) and is co-director of Carterdavies - a Professional First Aid Training company that specialises in delivering training to Dental and GP surgeries. Jane gained her Certificate in Education in 2007 with the University of Portsmouth. |
