| Additional information | ii. To help improve the early detection and prevention of oral cancer in the primary care dental setting. The Objectives of this course are : 1. To discuss why oral cancer cases in the UK and worldwide are increasing 2. To revise the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and discuss the selection criteria for referral, in accordance with current local arrangements and national guidance 3. To discuss how the entire dental team can work together to prevent oral cancer and improve its early detection, in the primary care dental setting 4. To discuss the signs, symptoms, diagnosis and management of diseases of the oral mucosa 5. To review the treatment and dental manifestations of diabetes In addition to oral cancer, the course will include (but will not be limited to) reference to oral lichen planus, recurrent oral ulceration, dry mouth, burning mouth, allergies, altered taste, xerostomia and common oral infections. This course is intended for the entire practice team: Dental Nurses, Dentists, Receptionists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Receptionists. Dr Caroline Pankhurst BSc PhD BDS MSC MRCPath (Specialist in Oral Microbiology), GDC 58599, is a dentist who has published extensively in the fields of oral microbiology, dental unit waterlines and oral medicine, including two books on infection control entitled “Control of Infection Guidelines for General Dental Practice” now in its fourth edition, and co-authored “Basic Guide to Prevention and Infection Control in Dentistry”. She is actively involved in postgraduate dental education and training and was a finalist in the e- Learning Awards 2012. Caroline has been a member of the Editorial Boards of “Primary Dental Care” and BMC Oral Health; is a member of the SAC in Medical Microbiology (Royal College of Pathologists), the BDA Central Committee for Dental Academic Staff and a Director of the charity the Fungal Infection Trust. She was President of BDA Metropolitan Branch in 2006. Dr Richard Cook GDC 64984 is a Senior Lecturer in diagnostic technologies within KCL and is also an Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine and Clinical Lead of the Oral Medicine Unit at Guys Hospital Campus of KCL. He is Dual qualified (Guys Dentistry and Birmingham Medicine), spending 50% of his week in frontline NHS Service provision in Oral Medicine and the remainder of the week teaching Human Disease to the undergraduate students and running his Optical Diagnostics research with his colleagues, PhD and Masters students. |

Demonstrate ability to answer patient queries at an appropriate level, so as to provide clear information about oral cancer screening, referral arrangements and survival rates 4.
