DescriptionAn initial presentation on indications for surgical therapy is followed by a description of a simple surgical technique for pocket reduction, using graphics, video and clinical cases. The rest of the session is entirely hands-on using pig’s jaws to practice the techniques described. A similar format follows in the afternoon, when periodontal regeneration and root resections are discussed and practiced.
Additional informationPig’s jaws are supplied but not surgical equipment, which must be brought by each participant (see equipment list).

The course should enable participants to:
• Carry out simple pocket reduction surgery
• Manage vertical bone defects predictably
• Carry out root resection procedures.
Intended Audience GDPs

1. Dr Phil Ower - Phil Ower, GDC 52722, qualified from King's London in 1978. He joined the RAF after qualifying and was a general dental practitioner until taking an MSc in Periodontology in 1992, after which he was RAF Adviser in Periodontology and ran the RAF School of Dental Hygiene. After leaving the RAF he lectured at the Eastman Dental Institute and worked in several specialist practices. For 10 years he worked alongside Bernie Kieser at the Periodontal Practice in London and now practices at the Briars Dental Centre in Newbury. Phil is on the GDC's Specialist Register, has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MGDS), and is currently serving his third term on the Council of the British Society of Periodontology, before becoming President in 2015/16. He has had papers published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Dental Update, Dental Practice and Independent Dentistry, and has been on the editorial boards of Dental Health and Primary Dental Care. Phil is a Module editor on the eDen project for e-Learning for Healthcare and is co-editing a new periodontal textbook for undergraduates. He lectures throughout the UK, and is responsible for the periodontal component of the FGDP(UK) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry in both London and Manchester.
2. Dr Ian Dunn - Ian Dunn, GDC 74439, qualified from Leeds in 1998 and went into general practice in the North West. In 2001 he was awarded Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners. In 2002 he joined the teaching staff at Liverpool Dental Hospital in the Periodontology Department where he is currently the Undergraduate Teaching Lead in Periodontics and holds an Honorary Speciality Doctor position. In 2010 he completed his MSc in Periodontology and in 2013 he was admitted to the GDC Specialist List in Periodontics. Ian spends three days a week in private practice in the North West of England where he takes referrals for all aspects of Periodontology. He is the British Society of Periodontology regional representative for Merseyside and Cheshire, and is also the BSP Honorary Editor and Webmaster
