SubjectCore - Medical Emergencies
DescriptionThis course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an Introduction to primary care NHS dentistry – essential for Validation by Experience Dentists. This course is also suitable for other dentists who are new to the NHS, dentists returning to NHS practice, and any dental professional interested in learning more about the featured topics. This theory course meets the annual GDC requirements for CPD in medical emergencies and follows the UK Resuscitation Council guidelines in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Immediate Life Support (ILS).

Aims

1.  To enable learners to identify common medical emergencies and manage them in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

Objectives

1. To provide training in how to perform an urgent care assessment of an ill patient

2. To describe the use of ABCDE AND NEWS.

3. To outline the team approach to managing medical emergencies.

4. To describe the drugs and equipment required for the management of medical emergencies in dental practice.

Learning outcomes

Following this course, learners should be able to: 

1. Recognise signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies and identify severe medical events which require hospital admission.

2. Recognise, manage and provide basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies, in line with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.

3. Describe the indications and method of delivery of drugs held in general dental practice for managing medical emergencies.
