Katy Newell-Jones is a facilitator and researcher with 15 years of supporting ‘creative teaching’ in health and social care in the UK and overseas. In 2004, she was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Academy of Higher Education, which she used to promote collaborative learning between facilitators in palliative care in Argentina and South Africa. She developed and facilitates the Developing Dental Educators course for the Dental School and is Programme Director for the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical and Dental Education with Oxford Brookes University

Aims
  1. To determine one’s learning style, recognise the different learning styles and see how to use this information with maximum effectiveness in the learning environment
  2. Increase patients’ awareness and understanding by careful explanation of treatment options and procedures, and the use of effective communication skills.
  3. Present questions to the patient (or carer) in a clear, concise and understandable manner.
  4. Address challenging communication situations including the effective management of anger, confusion or misunderstanding of patients.
