Description The objectives of this course will be to provide a critical overview of the following: •Interpersonal skills and how to work co-operatively with others •Professionalism •GDC Standards for the Dental Team •Current legal and ethical issues facing the dental team and how dentists are monitored •Raising concerns •Complaints handling. This course is intended for Dental Foundation Trainees Nick Torlot I trained at University College Hospital, London and qualified in 1983. I continued there working as a Houseman and Senior House Officer and then moved to Great Ormond Street. In 1986 I joined the Community Dental Service in Camden and Islington and moved to Hampshire in 1989. I have been involved in training and education in all of my posts. I set up Vocational Training and MFDS posts in Hampshire and became a trainer and VT Adviser with the London Deanery. With the closure of the CDS Scheme in London I then worked with NHS Education South Central (NESC) as a trainer within the Winchester scheme I joined the DDU in January 2010 and am now a full time Dento Legal Adviser.

Aims
  1. Be able to communicate effectively with the dental team and patients in order to continuously improve services and meet patient expectations
  2. Have examined the principles of patient consent and professional behaviour in order to meet the GDC standards
  3. Be up-to-date with current legislation and recognise the core ethical principles of practice
  4. Be able to summarise the procedures for raising concerns and handling complaints in order to act promptly to protect patients and deal with complaints effectively
