DescriptionGDP appraisers for GDPs on the National Performers List managed by NHSE South (Wessex) should receive appraiser training annually as a minimum. The aim of this course is to meet this requirement and review, reinforce and improve participants’ existing knowledge and skills. The course will also equip participants with the initial knowledge and understanding of the PROGRESS quality assurance and development of appraisal summary tool.

• To outline the principles and processes underpinning GDP appraisal
• To demonstrate appropriate levels of challenge and how to give well-timed, constructive and perceptive feedback
• To suggest challenges for common appraisal problems and provide training on how to handle difficult appraisals
• To outline what makes a good summary of appraisal and how to build personal development plan (PDP) objectives
• To provide information about the PROGRESS quality assurance and development of appraisal summary tool.

The refresher training course is designed for experienced GDP appraisers.

Dr Stephanie Hughes BSc (Hons) BMBCh (Oxon) MRCGP Cert Med Ed MAcadMEd is a GP Principal and Partner at the Homewell Curlew Practice in Havant. She is also Associate Dean Wessex Appraisal Service and the Locality Lead (Hampshire) for Primary Care Research, Wessex: Clinical Research Network. Stephanie enjoys running training workshops for undergraduate and postgraduate doctors and dentists, and is now working with the Dental Deanery on the development of a widespread, valuable, quality assured appraisal programme for GDPs across Thames Valley and Wessex.

Aims
  1. Describe the key principles and processes underpinning GDP appraisal and apply consistently when conducting an appraisal
  2. Provide support and challenge for a GDP’s development in a formative and developmental way so as to deliver a good appraisal discussion and promote quality improvements in practice
  3. Identify potential areas of difficulty within the appraisal process and develop strategies for dealing with difficult appraisals
  4. Write a good summary of appraisal discussion with agreed actions for every appraisal, so as to assist GDPs in the production of effective PDPs
  5. List the criteria against which appraisal summaries will be assessed and prepare for assessment
