| Description | This course will be given by Peter Raftery, specialist in endodontics, and Michael Thomas, specialist in prosthodontics, and will provide an update on the rationale for tooth restoration following root canal treatment, including when to restore with a post and the need for coronal/cuspal coverage. The course will contain both practical and didactic teaching and will update GDPs in the theory and materials in current use for root-filling and restoring root-filled teeth, as well as practical experience of core build-up and partial coverage cast restorative techniques. |
| Additional information | Delegates will learn about: • Ideal access cavities (with emphasis on preservation of tooth structure), • Apical management of gutta-percha when a post is required • Treatment aims when restoring root-filled teeth • Factors which should be considered when deciding whether a post is necessary or not • Design features for posts • Hands-on practical: GuttaCore obturation and preparation for ParaPost post • Factors which should be considered when deciding whether a cast restoration should be placed on a root-filled tooth • Crown lengthening techniques • Design features for cast restorations • Hands-on practical: Preparation of partial coverage cast restorations. DELEGATES NEED TO BRING THE FOLLOWING: • Two single-rooted teeth prepared ready for obturation • One intact molar • Burs for cutting access cavities • Size 10 and 15 hand files 21mm length • Size 2 and 3 Gates Glidden drills. This course is suitable for dentists Michael Thomas MSc BDS MRD RCS DGDP (UK) LDS RCS, GDC 65063, is in practice at the Wessex Dental Specialist Centre, Fareham. He is a Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher for undergraduate and postgraduate students and is Deputy Programme Director, Advanced Minimal Intervention MSc by Distance Learning, at King’s College London. He is a Specialist in Prosthodontics for Oasis Healthcare and a Board Member of the FGDP. Peter Raftery BDentSc MSc MFDS MClinDent MRD MEndo, GDC 82666 is a Specialist in endodontics. He graduated in dentistry from Trinity College, Dublin in 2003 before attending Oxford University on a rugby scholarship where he fulfilled an ambition an ambition to play in the Varsity match before collecting an MSc in Diagnostic Imaging. Whilst at Oxford he worked part-time in general dental practices in Abingdon and Bicester. Following this he worked as a maxillofacial Senior House Officer at Poole Hospital. In 2007 he began full-time specialist training at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London, and over the course of this three year period, gained a Masters in Clinical Dentistry and then the Membership in Restorative Dentistry (MRD) from the Royal College of Surgeons in England (RCSEng) as well as the Membership in Endodontics (MEndo) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh (RCSEd). With these qualifications he was enrolled onto the GDC Endodontics Specialist Register in 2012. Peter now owns a specialist endodontic practice in Portsmouth and also works as a clinical teacher at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. |
