DescriptionThis evening is entirely devoted to Dental Nurses and Student Dental Nurses and will launch the first of these monthly meetings for Dental Nurses. There will be an hour's CPD in which our speaker Joan Hatchard looks at the role of the dental nurse and the importance of professional associations in dentistry - BADN in particular. There will be an informative and inspiring talk from Emma Jolliffe about her experience of the Oral Health Practitioner Apprenticeship course, and further discussion around pathways for progression available for dental nurses. Following this will be an open forum chaired by our guest speaker and the Tutor facilitating the event.

Joan Hatchard gained her National Certificate in 1988, and went on to gain post qualification certificates in Oral Health Education, Radiography, and Conscious Sedation. She became the practice manager of two busy private general dental practices. Joan started teaching the National Certificate course in 1989. She also gained the FAETC and the Certificate in Education (FE), and holds the City and Guilds Licentiateship in Dental Nursing. Joan was an examiner on the NEBDN Panel of Examiners for the National Diploma and the Certificate in Oral Health Education. She was the Chair of BADN Practice Managers’ and Receptionists’ National Group, and then Finance Officer. More recently, Joan has been a member of the BADN Executive Committee, as Acting Chairwoman and as Treasurer. Joan is a BADN Fellow and received the 2013 BADN Award for Outstanding Contribution to Dental Nursing.

Aims

The forum has been set up to give dental nurses an ability to network and have support for wellbeing plus be empowered to progress and further their career. 

Objectives
  • To give dental nurses a clear understanding of the role of the professional associations within dentistry.
  • To outline the benefits, tangible and intangible, of professional association membership, and that of BADN in particular.
  • To understand the support that they can receive and routes for career development
Learning outcomes
  • Dental nurses should leave the presentation with an understanding of professional associations, their place in dentistry, and the benefits of membership Dental nurses should also leave with a clear idea of what BADN has done, does, and can do for the dental nursing profession.
  • The participants will have knowledge of career pathways and future routes to progression.
