DescriptionThe aim of this course is to build an understanding of the main components of clinical governance and to explain the steps involved in orthodontic referral. Topics covered will include: * How Clinical Governance underpins the quality assurance programme regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) * Information and other governance for healthcare * The CQC's role in regulating the dental profession * Clinical audit * Risk management * Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and selection criteria for orthodontic referral. This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking FTE. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists can book to attend if places remain available 14 days in advance of the course. Verna Easterby-Smith BDS MSc, GDC 56097 is the Clinical Commissioning Lead (Dental) - Wessex Area Team, NHS England, a Specialist Clinical Dental Lead - Solent NHS Trust and the Dental Tutor - Winchester and Basingstoke, Wessex Deanery, Health Education England. Verna qualified at the Royal London Hospital in 1981, obtained her MSc in Gerodontics in 1986 and is on the GDC Specialist lists for Prosthodontics and Special Care Dentistry. Additional informationn MScD Wales DOrth RCS Eng, GDC 53099, is the Lead Consultant in Southampton for the regional cleft lip and palate service. Her particular interests are orthognathic surgery, complex orthodontic cases and diagnostic services for general dental and medical practitioners.

  4. Be able to act on the basis of IOTN in order to refer patients for specialist orthodontic treatment appropriately
