| Description | This course will revise:- Inhalation sedation with N20 / O2 – revision of relevant anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, patient selection (indications and contraindications), equipment, technique, monitoring, complications, role of the dental nurse. |
| Additional information | Intravenous sedation with midazolam - revision of relevant anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, patient selection (indications and contraindications), equipment, technique, monitoring, complications, role of the dental nurse, use of flumazenil. Oral sedation, intranasal sedation and alternative sedation techniques. Legislation related to practising conscious sedation including practice set up and equipment, training requirements for dentists and dental nurses, record keeping, consent. This course is suitable for dentists who are currently practicing conscious sedation techniques, or who have an interest in conscious sedation prior to undertaking further recommended training. It assumes prior theoretical and practice knowledge in conscious sedation techniques. Sukina Moosajee, GDC No. 78216, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Sukina qualified from GKT Dental Institute in 2000. She spent her first 4 years after qualifying working in various hospital and general dental practice posts before joining Buckinghamshire Priority Dental Service in 2004. Sukina was based in Milton Keynes and worked as a Dental Officer then Senior Dental Officer, and also as a part-time Specialty Dentist in the Department of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry at Guy’s Hospital from 2007 to 2009. Sukina undertook specialist training in Special Care Dentistry with Oxfordshire Salaried Primary Care Dental Service (Oxford Deanery) in October 2009 and obtained her CCST in October 2012, when she also commenced as Locum Consultant in Special Care Dentistry in the Department of Community Special Care Dentistry at King’s College Hospital. She was appointed to the substantive post of Consultant in Special Care Dentistry in September 2013. Sukina has been practising conscious sedation techniques (inhalation sedation with N2O/O2 and intravenous sedation with midazolam) since 2005 in both primary and secondary care settings. She also has an MSc degree in Sedation and Special Care Dentistry. Yvonne Rooney, GDC No. 156293, Specialty Registrar in Special Care Dentistry, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Yvonne qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 2008. She moved to Dorset in 2008 to complete her VT year and spent subsequent years as an SHO in OMFS, Southampton, Associate GDP, Wiltshire and Dental Officer, Somerset. She started her specialty training with King's College NHS Foundation Trust in October 2013. Simultaneously she commenced a Masters in Sedation and Special Care Dentistry, King's College London. As part of her training Yvonne uses a variety of conscious sedation techniques for special care patients, both in primary and secondary care services. |
