DescriptionThe aim of this practical course is to provide information and training in minor oral surgery activities relevant to the GDP. Topics covered will include: * Overview of minor oral surgery in general dental practice * Effective local anaesthesia * Simulated oral surgery procedures on models such as surgical removal of upper and lower molar roots, and lower third molars * Hands-on training in flap design, bone removal and suturing on models. Oral surgery practices will be performed on Oral Surgery Jaw Models in the well-equipped Dental Simulation Suite, RHCH Education Centre. The course is run in an informal setting where questions and debate are actively encouraged. Delegates are encouraged to bring radiographs of MOS referrals that 'haven't met the criteria for referral to secondary care' and/or cases they would like to discuss with our speakers. Please ensure that all patient data is anonymised. This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking FTE. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists can book to attend if places remain available 14 days in advance of the course. Additional informationhas worked in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments throughout the UK. She is a Dental Tutor/Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy, an examiner for the LDS RCS (Eng) examinations, and owns a dental practice in Eastleigh, Hampshire, with her husband Sanjay. Latha practices all aspects of dentistry with a special interest in surgical dentistry, sedation and dental implants.

Sanjay Davda DDS (Dar es Salaam) FDS RCS (Eng), GDC 81635, graduated in 1989 from the University of Dar es Salaam and has worked in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments throughout the UK since 1990. He is currently a Clinical Teacher in Oral Surgery at King’s College London Dental Institute and owns a dental practice with his wife, Latha. Sanjay’s special interests are aesthetic dentistry, implants, oral surgery and conscious sedation, accepting referrals from other dental practitioners for treatment under conscious sedation. Sanjay holds Certificates in Conscious Sedation (BUOLD) and Implant Dentistry. He is fluent in 2 Indian languages and Swahili, and every year conducts Free Dental Camps in villages across Southern India.

  1. Have received training in instrument set-up, and studied the range of minor oral surgical procedures that can be undertaken in general dental practice in order to provide those activities safely
  2. Have received training in effective local anaesthesia for minor oral surgery in order to improve the patient experience
  3. Have performed oral surgery procedures on models including instrumentation, flap design, bone removal, tooth sectioning, extraction and suturing, and be able to carry them out with confidence in the clinical setting
