DescriptionThis is a DCP Study day aimed at dental nurses. The day will consist of a dental radiography update to include grading of radiographs and some group work.
Additional informationThis is followed by a lecture on the oral health promotion work undertaken in Milton Keynes and Aylesbury areas, and how you can improve your own oral health messages. The day will conclude with a lecture on aspects of law & ethics, including how the law stands regarding important issues for dental nurses.
If you work in a clinical environment, the GDC recommends you carry out CPD in dental radiography and legal and ethical issues to make sure you are up to date.

The intended audience is Dental nurses

Mrs Nikki Rogers teaches DCPsat Bristol Dental Hospital. She is currently Chairperson of the NEBDN Dental Radiography Committee.

Mrs Julie Ailward has many years’ experience in the Oral Health Promotion team in Buckinghamshire. She holds the NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education and has taught this course herself for some years.

Christopher Williams has been involved with the dental industry for the last 8 years, running a large private practice for 4 of those, as well as having worked with both Denplan and Oasis, training DCP’s in the lead up to CQC and how to meet best practice.
More recently Chris has moved away from direct involvement with the dental industry to teaching and lecturing in Schools and Universities.

Aims
  1. To update DCP’s in radiography and radiation protection for optimum patient safety. Understand their role within IRR 1999 and IR(ME)R 2000. Understand the role of Employers, Referrers, Practitioners and Operators.
  2. Be aware of the importance of quality assurance programmes and quality assurance procedures. Recognise film faults and know how to prevent them
  3. Be up to date on key messages for oral health promotion today. Understand Oral Health Promotion in your area Milton Keynes & Bucks. Be aware of a local OHP initiative ‘Prevention in practice’.
  4. Be up to date with legislation and codes of conduct surrounding everyday dental practice. Know how to work within the legal framework set by the GDC.
  5. Be able to define professionalism. Understand key issues relating to consent, confidentiality and record keeping - minimising the risk of accidental breaches.
