AvailabilityCourse has taken place
SubjectCore - Radiology
DescriptionThis one day course will update about many aspects of dental radiography including: * Radiation physics * Radiation safety * Clinical governance * Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 * Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2000 * Radiographs in clinical diagnosis. In addition, delegates will use a range of film holders and beam aiming devices in a simulated dental surgery environment, in order to enhance the acquisition of new clinical skills. This course meets UK GDC verifiable CPD requirements in radiography and radiation protection. It also satisfies the IRMER requirement for dentists or radiography qualified Dental Care Professionals. This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Vocational Training by Assessment. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists/DCPs can book to attend if places remain available 14 days in advance of the course. Ian Hamilton MSc BDS BSc Civ Eng, GDC 68870 is a dentist with a background in radiation protection who, after gaining his MSc in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, was appointed as the Subject Matter Expert for the Defence Dental Services. Ionising radiation and Core of Knowledge training delivered by Ian, at undergraduate and postgraduate level across England and Scotland, is always entertaining and extremely informative. Mrs Rita Harper,
Additional informationGDC 119985, initially trained as a dental nurse in Germany and although she has since worked in the NHS, the private sector and hospitals, she has spent the majority of her career as a civilian nurse in the Royal Army Dental Corps. Mrs Harper has additional qualifications in oral health promotion, dental sedation, dental implants, impression taking, debris and plaque scoring, and qualified in dental radiography in 2001. Hugely experienced in the practical techniques of intra-oral radiography, she has taught on the Introduction to NHS courses since 2011.

  2. Have studied the fundamentals of radiation physics, radiobiology and radiation risks, and the role and importance of QA procedures and image-quality auditing in ensuring the consistent quality of radiographs
  3. Have revised the practical techniques for intra-oral radiography, including the use of bisecting angle techniques where appropriate
  4. Have demonstrated in a surgery setting the correct positioning of film and film holder/aiming devices in conjunction with accurate tube-head alignment for bitewing and periapical radiographs (anterior and posterior)
