DescriptionThis afternoon only course will give you a fascinating insight into the work of a forensic Dentist. However, more importantly for the Dental professional it will raise the importance of dental radiography and accurate charting and recording. It will become apparent as to how dental ID is accomplished

John began professional career in general dental practice, later specialising in orthodontics. Having obtained a Forensic Odontology diploma acted as consultant for a funeral company, specialising in disaster management and now also works for police, coroners, lawyers and other agencies. He is past President of the British Association for Forensic Odontology (BAFO) and also holds the diploma in Forensic Human identification. He is chairman and senior odontologist for the BAFO DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) team and Identification Manager for Blake International Emergency Services.
He has attended and been involved in mass fatalities in Indonesia, Milan, Colombia, South Africa, Bahrain, Phuket. Lebanon and with the ante mortem records for the deployments in Brazil, Libya and New Zealand. He was heavily involved with identification in the Asian tsunami where he worked both in Sri Lanka and Thailand acting as dental team manager in charge of all the international dentists, both in mortuary and reconciliation work. More recently he was lead odontologist at the M5 motorway crash. He lectures both in UK and abroad, is a UK member of the standing committee for DVI at Interpol HQ in Lyon, France where he has also presented and is a member of the Home office mass fatalities expert group. He has written chapters on odontology for various text books on DVI and is part of the police training program for crime scene investigators, mortuary managers.
As well as being a local magistrate and a private pilot he is the piano player in a jazz band.

Aims
  1. To be aware of the importance of odontology and the methodology of bite mark analysis. To be aware of the scope and value of dental ID in the mass disaster situation.
  2. The importance of dental radiography and accurate charting and recording will become apparent and how dental ID is accomplished
  3. Delegates will have gained an overview of forensic odontology and background knowledge of the DVI process so that they may be more aware of the role that it plays in investigative processes.
