Aims
  1. Identify from the patient upon examination, the symptoms and principal complaint, and any relevant history
  2. Assess dental, skeletal and occlusal relationships in the primary, mixed and permanent dentition accurately, and identify conditions which may require treatment or referral onwards
  3. Understands which items of treatment fall within NHS regulations* and those which do not, and can discuss the consequences of this with the patient in a manner he or she can understand.
  4. Is willing to communicate with other professionals when appropriate in order to obtain additional information and/or treatment for the patient. The trainee can demonstrate the ability to refer patients for specialised treatment or advice in a manner that causes the least anxiety possible.
  5. Determine patients’ dentofacial aesthetic requirements, identify the degree to which they can be met, discuss the different options, and manage patient expectations.
