DescriptionThis course will provide a comprehensive update on the clinical features and management of oral cancer. The course also meets the GDC CPD cycle requirement for “Oral Cancer – Improving early detection”.
Additional informationThe importance of the “Patient Journey” is considered, and emphasised by a live interview with an oral cancer patient. The dental implications of chemoradiotherapy are considered by a consultant oncologist, whom delegates will be able to question.
The course will also allow delegates the opportunity to meet and confer with their local oral and maxillofacial consultant surgeons.

This course is suitable for the entire practice team.

Sanjay Sharma MD FDSRCS FRCS, GDC 66305 is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Consultant at the University Hospitals Birmingham and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts. He trained at King’s College London and St Bartholomew’s Hospital to achieve his dual qualification status. Sanjay was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine in 2008 for his work on the genetics of cancer growth and his special interests include reconstructive surgery for head and neck cancer. He has set up the Wessex Facial Nerve Centre to help treat people with facial nerve paralysis and the new head and neck melanoma sentinel lymph node biopsy service. His teaching interests include both undergraduate and postgraduate lectures and he has set up the new cadaveric dissection master class courses at Southampton University School of Medicine for GDPs and surgical trainees.

Madan Ethunandan BDS MSc, GDC 83060 is a Consultant Maxillofacial/Head & Neck Surgeon and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Madan has a Masters degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery and has a special interest in head and neck cancer, surgical dermatology, facial deformity and skull base surgery. He is the expert advisor for salivary gland diseases for the BJOMS and the module editor for surgical dermatology for the e-learning for healthcare (BAOMS/DOH) programme. Madan is actively involved in research and education and is a published author with over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals and multiple author books.

Ramkumar Shanmugasundaram, GMC 5195161 is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist sub-specialising in head and neck cancers, skull base tumours and colorectal cancers at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Lead. His special research interest is improving functional outcomes for head and Neck cancer patients. Dr Ram trained as a Radiation Oncologist in India, completing his IMRT, IGRT (Image-Guided Radiation Therapy) Fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital, in 2009.
