DescriptionIn the morning, the course will cover radiography and radiation protection. This course meets UK GDC verifiable CPD requirements in radiography and radiation protection. It does not satisfy the IRMER requirement for dentists or radiography qualified Dental Care Professionals.
Additional informationIn the afternoon, the theory of medical emergencies will be taught, focusing on Diabetes and Cardiac Conditions. Please note this is not a hands on CPR course.

Ian Hamilton is a registered dentist with a background in radiation protection and an MSc in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. He has presented on radiation safety at International conferences in Budapest (2009) and Hiroshima (2011). Ian teaches at undergraduate level (Peninsula Dental School) and to newly-qualified dentists undertaking their Foundation training (Oxford and Wessex Deaneries, NHS Scotland and NHS Highlands). Appointed as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Defence Dental Services, he lectures widely throughout the UK in Radiography and Radiation Protection for all members of the Dental Team and his course feed-back reports consistently rate this mandatory training as a lively, entertaining and informative day.

Phil Jevon is the Resuscitation Council Officer/Clinical Skills Lead at Manor Hospital, Walsall where he provides basic and advanced training for the nursing and medical staff through nationally recognised courses in PLS, APLS, ALS, ILS, EPLS, NLS and GIC courses. An Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham Phil is also a registered nurse and has worked in the NHS for over 29 years and published over 20 books on resuscitation and emergency care as well as over 120 published articles in peer review journals.

  1. Know the principal components of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 and Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000
  2. Have a fundamental understanding of radiation physics, radiobiology and radiation risks
  3. Have a fundamental understanding of radiation physics, radiobiology and radiation risks
  4. Understand the management of medical emergencies focusing on diabetes and cardiac conditions and resuscitation in the dental practice.
  5. Be able to describe the ABCDE approach to the assessment of the acutely ill patient
