Additional informationMORNING1.Look at some of the issues that arise particularly in litigated cases involving periodontal disease. This will include considering the framework of a typical dental negligence claim and timescales involved.
2.Consider various ways to reduce the risk of litigation or at least assist in defending claims when they arise.
3.Look at a real life case study of a periodontal disease claim to see how it all works in practice.
AFTERNOON; 1. With the advent of the new dental contract, it is more important than ever that dental practitioners fully assess their patients' periodontal health prior to embarking on restorative work.
We will cover how to make this assessment using the revised Basic Periodontal Examination emphasising the importance of furcated teeth.
2. For patients found to have advanced disease, more thorough investigation should be undertaken and the course will cover how to perform the fuller assessment. It is important to know which patients with advanced disease can be treated in practice and which referred and what the referral options are. This course will give clear guidelines so that appropriate choices are made, eliminating the risk of litigation.
3. Communication difficulties can lead to dentists feeling frustrated that patients do not seem to want to accept periodontal treatment and this course will aim to show how communication and motivation can be enhanced for satisfactory outcomes.
