DescriptionManaging dental patients on Bisphosphonates, and how to manage patients in pain on long waiting lists, especially those requiring oral surgery. This course builds on the bitesize lunchtime course earlier in the year with the addition of how to manage the dental patient in acute or chronic pain who is on a long waiting list for specialist dental care. The Webinar is aimed at Dentists and DCP's and will be delivered as a Webinar via the Zoom platform.

Our speaker Neil Oastler has recently retired as dentist, Specialist Oral Surgeon, having worked almost exclusively within the NHS for nearly 38 years, the last 26 of which have been in Oxfordshire, working for the Community Dental Service. Much of his work has been undertaking the dental care of adult and paediatric special care patients under sedation (predominately inhalational sedation) and day case general anaesthesia as well as the delivery of oral surgery within primary care. He also was the operational lead for the Out of Hours emergency dental service from 2006 until 2020.

Neil was a former teacher for dental nurse training and an examiner for the NEBDN ; an Association of Dental Anaesthetists (ADA) council member 2010-2021. a previous Council Member of British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) for 6 years 2012-2018, the Chair of the Thames Valley Managed Clinical Network (Oral Surgery) 2014 – present, and the Minutes and Meeting Secretary for Oxfordshire Local Dental Committee since 2004. Neil was awarded Life Membership of the BDA in 2020 for services to local and national dentistry.

Aims

To define what is MRONJ ; What is a bisphosphonate and anti- re-sorptive medication.

For attendees to gain a better understanding of Bisphosphonates and anti re-sorptive medications and how they impact on the delivery of general dentistry and the potential to cause medicine related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ)

Attendees will know how to best manage patients in pain on long waiting lists especially those awaiting oral surgery.

Objectives

By the end of the presentation delegates will be able to Identify from a patient’s medical history which patients are most likely to be taking Bisphosphonates and Anti Resorptive medication (B & A-RM) develop treatment regimes for patients to minimise the risk of developing MRONJ be aware of the least traumatic way of extracting teeth to minimise MRONJ where extraction is unavoidable develop appropriate treatment regimes for patients in acute or chronic pain.

Learning outcomes

Attendees will have the confidence to manage patients at risk of developing MRONJ more confidently and how to manage the patient in pain for whom definitive treatment is not quickly forthcoming because of being on a waiting list for specialist treatment.
