This lecture will address GDC requirement for verifiable CPD in this core subject: understanding the principles of Radiation Protection and how these are translated into practice. Ian will enable you to have an overview of the implications for radiation detriment to the patient of various radiographic techniques and alternative imaging modalities.

Attending this course will also provide evidence to demonstrate compliance with some of the requirements of CQC outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 13 and 14.

Aims
  1. Understand what statutory legislation is applicable to Dental Radiology/Radiography (IRR99, IR(ME)R2000, IR(ME)Amending Regulations 2006) and what specific roles and responsibilities are laid down within these Regulations (with particular regard to Local Rules and Pregnancy).
  2. Revise the nature of and specific hazards associated with ionising radiation in order that all members of the Dental Team understand the need to protect both themselves and their patients.
  3. Understand the principles of Radiation Protection and how these are translated into practice. Have an overview of the implications for radiation detrimental to the patient, various radiographic techniques and alternative imaging modalities.
  4. Understand the requirement for a Quality Assurance programme and the need for (and benefits to be gained from) auditing image quality at appropriate intervals. Revise positioning techniques for both intraoral and panoramic radiography.
