DescriptionThis HANDS-ON course will cover aspects of minor oral surgery relevant to the GDP including:
Additional information• Overview of minor oral surgery in general dental practice
• Management of the medically compromised patient needing minor oral surgery
• Effective local anaesthesia including infiltration practice on models
• Simulated surgical extraction of a first molar tooth on models
• Hands-on training in flap design, bone removal and suturing on models
• Case selection.

Oral surgery practices will be performed on Oral Surgery Jaw Models in the well equipped Phantom Head facility at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. The course is run in an informal setting where questions and debate are actively encouraged.

This essential course will provide training to enhance the acquisition of new clinical skills and enable practitioners to gain confidence in the delivery of high quality dentistry.

This course is intended for General Dental Practitioners.

Latha Davda BDS (Bangalore), MDS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery India), FDS RCS (Eng), M Surg Dent RCS (Edin), MSc in Dental Implantology (Warwick), FHEA
Latha graduated in 1989 from Bangalore, India, after which she did her Masters in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She came to the UK on a prestigious T.C. White Scholarship, awarded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. She is now a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).

Latha has been involved in the teaching of oral surgery to dental undergraduates for many years, both in the UK and India, and has worked as a Senior House Officer, Specialist Registrar and Staff Grade, in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments throughout the UK. She was a Clinical Teacher in Oral Surgery at the Royal London Dental Hospital and is currently teaching part-time at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy.

Latha also has a Masters in Implant Dentistry from the University of Warwick, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an examiner for the LDS RCS (Eng) examinations. She owns a dental practice in Eastleigh, Hampshire, with her husband Sanjay. She practices all aspects of dentistry and her special interests are surgical dentistry, sedation and dental implants.

Latha is an accomplished amateur artist and speaks the following languages in addition to English; Hindi, Kannada, Konkani and Gujarati.

Sanjay Davda DDS (Dar es Salaam), FDS RCS (Eng)
Sanjay graduated in 1989 from the University of Dar es Salaam and is a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons (England). He has worked as a Senior House Officer and Staff Grade in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments throughout the UK since 1990. He is currently a Clinical Teacher in Oral Surgery at King’s College London Dental Institute and owns a dental practice with his wife, Latha. Sanjay’s special interests are aesthetic dentistry, implants, oral surgery and conscious sedation, accepting referrals from other dental practices for treatment under conscious sedation.

Sanjay holds Certificates in Conscious Sedation (BUOLD) and Implant Dentistry. He is fluent in 2 Indian languages and Swahili. He has also conducted Free Dental Camps annually in villages in South India over the past 4 years.

  2. To describe the management of medically compromised patients needing minor oral surgery in general dental practice
  3. To provide hands-on training in the surgical removal of a first molar tooth including instrumentation, flap design, bone removal, tooth sectioning, extraction and suturing
  4. To provide training in effective local anaesthesia for minor oral surgery
