| Description | Members of the dental team are in a position where they may observe the signs of child abuse or neglect, or hear something that causes them concern about a child. Every registrant with the General Dental Council or any member of the dental team, who works with children, has a responsibility to find out about local procedures for child protection and to follow them if a child is, or might be, at risk of abuse or neglect. |
| Additional information | Our speaker will help delegates to: • Be aware of their responsibilities with respect to child protection • Be able to recognise the presenting features of child abuse and neglect • Know how to share concerns appropriately if abuse is suspected • Know about laws and national guidance relating to protecting (safeguarding) children • Understand their role within current multi-agency child protection procedures • Be motivated and enabled to follow local child protection procedures correctly • Know where to find additional sources of support and advice. This course will help you feel confident in your role and know what is expected of you. In addition, attending this course will provide evidence to demonstrate compliance with some of the requirements of CQC outcome 4: care and welfare of people who use services, CQC outcome 6: cooperating with other providers, CQC outcome 7: safeguarding people who use services from abuse, CQC outcome 12: requirements relating to workers, CQC outcome 13: staffing, CQC outcome 14: supporting workers, CQC outcome 16: assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision and CQC outcome 21: records This course is intended for the entire practice team: Dentists, Therapists, Hygienists, Nurses, Practice Managers, Receptionists, Business Managers, Clinical Dental Technicians, Dental Technicians. Lindsay Voss qualified as Registered Nurse in 1981 and, following a career in hospital nursing became a community based school nurse in 1992. Having completed the Diploma in Community Nursing and a Degree in Nursing Studies at the University of Southampton in the 1990s, Lindsay became a School Nurse Team Leader in Southampton in 1996, and in 2000 undertook a one year secondment as the Named Nurse for Child Protection at Southampton University Hospitals Trust. In 2001 she undertook a further secondment as Adviser to the Area Child Protection Committee and in 2002 returned to the community as the Named Nurse for Child Protection. In 2007 she was appointed the Designated Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Safeguarding Children Team Manager and is a member of the Local safeguarding Children Board. Lindsay currently works for Southampton PCT and manages a team of specialist nurses including the Designated Nurse for Children in Care. She has continued academic study and is currently undertaking a clinical doctorate focusing on the multiagency response to childhood sexual abuse.
