| Additional information | Good communication skill is needed when taking a detailed history, obtaining consent, explaining a procedure to patients, responding to questions, motivating patients, calming and reassuring anxious patients. The aim of this programme is to understand communication and behaviour and their impact on the dental treatment. Attending this course will help dental professionals to achieve compliance against CQC outcomes e.g. Outcome 1: Responding and involving people who use services. Prof. Nicky Kilpatrick BDS, PhD, FDSRCPS, FRACDS (PAED)- Nicky graduated from the University of Birmingham and underwent specialist paediatric training in various London hospitals before completing her PhD at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1993. Following a fellowship year at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne Australia she took up the position of Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Sydney. In 1999 she returned to the Royal children’s Hospital as Director of the Dept of Dentistry where she also co-directed the Cleft Lip and Palate service. In mid 2010 she returned to the UK to take up the Chair in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Bristol. She remains an Honorary Fellow of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and has over 60 publications and lectures widely around the world. Her clinical interests focus on the oral health and management of children with special healthcare needs whilst her research interests include the aetiology and management of children with clefts of the lip and/or palate and the integration of oral health into child health and well being. Andrea Waylen PhD- Psychologist and Lecturer, University of Bristol and teaches social science and communication skills to dental undergraduates. She undertook her first degree in Psychology at the University of Reading and her PhD in risky behaviour was completed there in 2002. Her research interests include dento-facial appearance and quality of life (particularly related to cleft lip and palate and head and neck cancer) and the effects of relationships and communication on health outcomes and health-related behaviour. |
