Description | This webinar is suitable for the whole dental team and will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its medical management. There will be in depth discussion on the impact of ASD on oral health and the barriers they experience in being able to access dental care. Recommendations will be given to help enable successful dental care and create a positive experience for the patient and their family/support team. | ||
Additional information | Elizabeth Cheales - ST3 in Special Care Dentistry Oxfordshire Community Dental Service. Since graduating in 2014 I have had the opportunity to work within a number of different hospital training posts. All were wonderful training opportunities with a particular passion, enjoyment and aptitude for Special Care dentistry. I am now in my third year as an StR in Special Care dentistry within the Oxfordshire Community service whilst completing an integrated Masters. 18:00 – 19:30: Lecture Registration is 17:50 with the educational programme starting at 18:00. * Please note this course will be delivered via 'Zoom' platform as a Webinar. Aims | For attendees to gain a better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its medical management. For the dental team to appreciate the impacts that ASD can have on oral health. To explore some of the common challenges faced by the dental team when providing dental care for patients with ASD. For attendees to gain confidence in providing dental care for patients with ASD, in order to improve oral health and create positive experiences. | ||
Objectives | To define ASD,describe its epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and aetiology. To discuss the impacts of ASD on oral health and dental care. To discuss the barriers encountered by patients with ASD, and their families, when engaging with dental services, and how these can be overcome. To discuss what dental professionals can do to improve oral health and dental experiences for patients with ASD. | ||
Learning outcomes | Attendees will have a good understanding of ASD and its medical management. Attendees will appreciate the various ways in which ASD can impact on oral health and the ability to provide successful dental care. Attendees will be able to implement some evidenced based techniques into their clinical practice in order to improve the experiences and oral health of patients with ASD when attending for dental care. | ||
