DescriptionInteractive evidence-based hands-on Oral Surgery training for GDPs & dentists with a special interest in Minor Oral Surgery- an opportunity for dentists to learn and practise the principles and techniques of dentoalveolar surgery performed in daily practice. This is Day 2 : one of the three standalone days of intensive hands on training on sheep heads. It is not necessary to attend all 3 days, but you should have already attended the Day 1 Oral Surgery webinar on 30th June or 8th September 2020 or on 21st January or 12th March 2021. If not, and BEFORE YOU BOOK, please contact the Tutor nicola.spillane@hee.nhs to discuss your prior learning and eligibility to attend this course. Because of the pandemic, catering cannot be provided- please bring lunch and drinks. Basic PPE will be supplied but please bring and wear eye protection and gloves and masks if you wear very large or small sizes. Day 3: Date TBC Surgical extractions and removal of impacted teeth including wisdom teeth, apicoectomies Day 4: Date TBC: Soft tissue management: biopsy, crown lengthening, management of flaps.

Dr Kashif Hafeez has Membership and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and a postgraduate certificate in Medical & Dental education from Oxford Brookes. Kashif has a special interest in Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology, and is in practice in the Cotswolds. He has been a post graduate Dental Foundation trainer for Oxford Deanery and is a current Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, and  the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). Kashif acts as an expert & advisor to the General Dental Council. He teaches Oral surgery and Implantology at the Masters programme of BPP University, and lectures nationally and internationally on Oral surgery & Dental Implantology, including presenting his scientific work at various international conferences. In addition, Kashif serves as Editorial Board member for Porodental CPD and is a visiting Oral surgery Professor in Pakistan. He has a number of international publications. In 2013, he was honoured with the Dentist of the year award by APPS UK.

Aims

The aim of this course is to enable dentists to improve knowledge and skills in the principles and techniques of minor oral surgical procedures.

Objectives

Describe and demonstrate basic concepts of Minor Oral Surgical procedures, including incisions, suturing and flap design, extraction of teeth and elevation of roots.

Practise the steps involved in performing the most common minor oral surgical procedures including extractions, flap design and suturing.

Carry out practical exercises in achieving haemostasis

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

Define and demonstrate common minor oral surgery procedures: designing and raising appropriate flaps, tooth sectioning and suturing. 

Perform common minor oral surgical procedures, including removal of teeth and roots.

Describe different types of sutures and their indications.

Achieve haemostasis after dental procedures
