After completing his under graduation in 1998 Raj's post-graduate training has provided extensive exposure in the field of oral surgery. Due to his passion for involvement in patient care and teaching, Raj has successfully built his career excelling both academically and clinically and has completed a post-graduate program in medical education in Cardiff university. He was awarded a Fellowship in recognition of attainment against the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education by Advanced higher education academy.

Aims

To Improve General Dentist’s skills in assessment before extraction

To boost confidence in forceps and non-forceps techniques

To help dentists to make referrals via DERs/REGO easily and swiftly.

To improve General dentist’s understanding of oral surgery referral criteria for DERs/REGO

To boost communication via referral forms to avoid unnecessary rejection.

Objectives

To provide informative lecture to assist in minor oral surgery for the GDP, including patient assessment, care planning and instrument selection.

To discuss the types and appropriate use of forceps, elevators and luxators in specific situation

To outline referral criteria for oral surgery specialist services and secondary care

Provide teaching on DERs/REGO Referral which will enable patients to receive necessary dental advice and care in the most appropriate setting

Discuss common causes of referrals not being rejected.

Provide informative lecture on oral surgery referral pathway

Discuss the guidance and expectations from GDP in regard to oral surgical procedures in primary care ,under the GDS contract

Discuss when , what and how to refer considering the best interest of the patients

Learning outcomes

Able to apply the principles of extraction techniques in patient management for safe and effective oral surgery in general dental practice.

Reflect and carry out the steps involved, to gain confidence in removing teeth and roots in a safe and effective manner and reduce Dento-alveolar referrals to secondary care

Critically assess patients including medical conditions, difficulty of extraction to make appropriate referral to specialist services and secondary care

Manage patient referrals for Tier 2 & 3 level specialised services using DERS/REGO to avoid common mistakes that inevitably delay and ultimately affect treatment outcomes for patients.

Reflect and carryout appropriate measures to avoid unnecessary delays in patient management and treatment outcomes
