DescriptionThe Hands-on Workshop, run by Debbie Withers is designed for delegates to improve and refine their hand instrumentation skills and ultrasonic technique by adopting a minimally invasive non-surgical periodontal therapy (MINST) approach, enabling them to successfully improve patient treatment outcomes. The day will comprise a blended learning approach with lectures and a hands-on/practical element.

Debbie Withers

Debbie started her career in dentistry as a Dental Nurse in 1996, working in general dental practice, and subsequently qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2008. Debbie has worked in a mixture of NHS, private, and community dental services. She is now a full-time Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy, teaching undergraduate Dental Therapists, Hygienists, and Nurses. Debbie has completed a PG Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Aims

The workshop aims to introduce the theory and knowledge of MINST and demonstrate the clinical instrumentation techniques.

Objectives

Introduce the modern concepts of periodontal non-surgical therapy and MINST.

Demonstrate using different instruments and techniques for non-surgical periodontal therapy, and appreciate miniature hand instruments and ultrasonic tip designs.

Explain the rationale for atraumatic insertion techniques for minimally invasive non-surgical therapy.
