DescriptionThis course is ideal those delegates who have booked on to the practical Dental Therapy Refresher Course at William Beatty Building. It is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge that can be applied practically in the phantom head environment, in addition to some pre-reading. N.B. It is also appropriate for those who are not attending the course.
Additional information

Debbie started her career in dentistry as a Dental Nurse in 1996, working in general dental practice, and subsequently qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2008. Debbie has worked in a mixture of NHS, private, and community dental services. She is now a full-time Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy, teaching undergraduate Dental Therapists, Hygienists, and Nurses. Debbie has completed a PG Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Aims

This course's purpose is to refresh Dental Therapists on the aetiology, risk factors, and progression of dental caries. It will help them recognise early signs and understand the biological and environmental factors that contribute to the disease. It will also provide some guidance on practical restorative techniques.

Objectives

Refresh the Dental Therapist's knowledge and understanding of caries progression.

Ensure that participants can recognise the early signs of caries.

Guidance on the theory behind practical restorative techniques.

Learning outcomes

Demonstrate the application of the underpinning knowledge learnt in readiness for the Practical day.

Describe caries progression and understand the aetiology & risk factors.

Recognise the early signs of caries, and understand how this would be managed.
