DescriptionThis is a blended theory and practical course, with table-top opportunities to handle and practise the use of evidence based materials. This course supports recent NHS dental contract reforms, particularly Complex Care Pathway 1, however this course does not cover periodontal disease nor staging of periodontal disease. Professor Aylin Baysan, BDS, MSc.(Lond), PhD (Lond), MFDS RCSEd, SFHEA, FRSA, MEndo RCSEd, FDTFEd is an internationally recognised researcher in the field of Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID). Prof Baysan is a specialist in Prosthodontics and Endodontics, and holds or has held several positions in IADR committees and research groups.. She is the Editor and a contributor to the recent book "Minimally Invasive Dentistry: Interdisciplinary Clinical and Scientific Approaches", and has more than 50 peer reviewed publications including Dental Materials, Caries Research and 11 Book Chapters. Prof Baysan is Clinical Reader in Cariology in relation to Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID) at Queen Mary University of London, leads the MID programme there, supervising MSc and PhD students in the scope of MID research.  

Please arrive by 08.45 for a 09.00 start. Timings for a morning break, 40-minute lunchbreak and a very short afternoon break will be determined by the needs of the attendees. Reflection and evaluation: 16:00, Finish 16:15. Please bring loupes and light if you have them.

***Refreshments and lunch are not provided; these can be purchased in the nearby hospital restaurant, cafes or shop, or you may bring your own which can be taken in the TEC refectory.

We recommend you use public transport if possible. The Trust Education Centre  (TEC) at the Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) is a short 15-20 minute walk or bus journey from Reading station. RBH is well served by buses including Park and Ride services. Please allow adequate time for Reading traffic and hospital parking- you may find it more convenient to park nearby on Erleigh Road (up to 10 hours possible, same cost: £19.00 for > 6 hours as of 14/07/2026) rather than queue for the almost adjacent multi-story car park.

Aims

The aim is to provide an update on Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID) and support improved oral health outcomes for patients with significant caries risk or experience.

Objectives

Describe the principles underpinning the Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID) approach to prevention and management of caries

Describe the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of dental materials used in MID

Handle a range of dental materials suitable for MI Clinical Dentistry

Consideration of case presentations involving case management discussions, reflection and review of outcomes

Discuss implementation of preventive strategies and health education for the patient

Learning outcomes

Recall the principles of Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID)

Evaluate a range of prevention and dental disease control management strategies and techniques that will support your patients to manage their own oral health, for optimal general health
