Availability | Course has taken place |
Subject | CPD - Supervisors |
Description | Do you at times struggle with helping patients and trainees with changing behaviour despite it being it being clear that change would be beneficial? |
Additional information | This half-day introduction to Motivational Interviewing introduces this widely applied psychological method that supports change in others. Motivational Interviewing (MI) emerged from the field of addictions treatment in the 1980s. Its focus over the past decades has broadened to change in general, and MI has been applied to many settings including healthcare, where it has been successfully used within brief clinical interventions. Adaptations of motivational interviewing are generally more effective in changing single behaviours than no or minimal interventions, and they are usually as effective as more intensive alternatives. (Rollnick, S. et al, BMJ 2005; 331; 961-963.) Motivational Interviewing works by activating a person’s own motivation for change, and this half day virtual workshop will teach participants about MI,the Spirit of the method and the theory behind it, and introduce some of the skills that underpin it. This half day precedes the full 2-day skills practice workshop and will support applications with trainees as well as clinical encounters. Delivered over Zoom
