DescriptionThis 2-day course introduces Doctors to Motivational Interviewing (MI) The course will focus on using the skills of MI in conversations between clinician and patient to support change-based consultations. Often to be helpful, clinicians try and convince patients to change, at times to no avail. MI allows us to consider a different way to work with people and help in a way that may allow sustained change. Initially focusing on developing the interpersonal relationship allows the opportunity to direct the conversation towards change where necessary even in those less ready to do so.

  • To learn the principles of MI and its difference to traditional practice
  • To reflect on current consultation style and help clinician’s move towards an MI style of practice
  • To learn and utilise the relational OARS-I skills to engage
  • To support trainees to use specific skills and strategies to integrate into practice when working with people who need to change
  • To recognise and work with Change Talk
  • To recognise and work with Ambivalence
  • To signpost trainees to continue the learning journey of MI

At the end of the course participants will be able to consider alternative ways to work with patients to improve clinical outcomes
