DescriptionThe primary aim of this 2-day workshop is to equip future leaders in medical education with the essential skills and strategies needed to excel in educational leadership roles.

Day One

Module 1: Foundations of Leadership in Medical Education This module lays the groundwork for effective leadership in medical education by introducing core principles and frameworks relevant to the field. Participants will explore various leadership styles, including those based on Goleman’s emotional intelligence approach, and learn how to apply these styles to inspire and engage educational teams. Emphasis will be placed on understanding individual leadership preferences and adapting one’s style to different situations to enhance team engagement and educational outcomes.

Module 2: Self-Awareness and Leadership Coaching The focus of this module is on developing a profound understanding of personal leadership styles and emotional intelligence. Participants will delve into advanced coaching techniques, including active listening, effective questioning, and providing constructive feedback. These skills are crucial for mentoring and supporting colleagues and trainees effectively. The module will also guide participants in creating a tailored personal leadership development plan that highlights their strengths and energy drivers, aiming to boost both individual and team performance.

 

Day Two

Module 3: Effective Team Dynamics and Inclusive Leadership This module explores the dynamics of successful team functioning within medical education. Participants will use Belbin’s team role theory to understand various roles within an educational team and identify key factors that contribute to a successful team environment. The discussions will focus on creating a positive, inclusive, and transparent team culture, fostering collaboration and high performance. Practical strategies for influencing and supervising colleagues to build and maintain a cohesive team will also be covered.

Module 4: Interpersonal Effectiveness and Strategic Leadership The final module addresses crucial aspects of leadership, including the development and communication of a compelling vision for the educational team. Participants will learn to articulate and align their vision with team goals to inspire and motivate collective effort. The module also covers effective change management strategies, including planning, implementation, and managing resistance within educational settings. Advanced techniques for influencing and negotiating will be explored, focusing on preparation, strategy, and conflict resolution. Finally, participants will enhance their resilience and emotional agility to handle high-pressure situations and lead effectively through challenges.
