This is a false belief that it doesn’t have a natural home in service industries or, particularly, in healthcare settings. LEAN, when properly explained and introduced into any organisation, enables a way of thinking and acting that is focused on maximising value to the ultimate end user (in the case of healthcare, the patient) whilst minimising wasteful practices in doing so. A lean organisation understands that end-user value proposition and focuses its key processes to continuously improve it. Lean is about establishing what is valuable for the patient and then optimising all value creating processes by cutting out waste and smoothing out unevenness in processes so that the service flows smoothly. All achieved through some very simple and very effective changes to the way things are done within the environment in which staff and patients interact. Description: This 2-day workshop will introduce you to the concepts of leadership you’ll need as you progress in your clinical career. In May 2017 the General Medical Council published its ‘Generic professional capabilities framework’ and emphasises that to achieve a UK certificate of completion of training (CCT), doctors must demonstrate an ‘appropriate and mature professional identity appropriate to their level of seniority’. In response to this requirement, Health Education England (HEE) offers you an opportunity to attend this 2-day workshop which primarily covers competencies required in Domain 5 – ‘Capabilities in leadership and team working’. If you have already completed Professional and Generic Skills (see below), you will not need to attend this course. The workshops will be delivered by expert academics and practitioners from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

Description: Background: Within the Acute, Community and Mental Health services in the South West quality improvement methods have been in use since 2009. As a region we have relatively well-developed infrastructures in most hospitals where trainees spend their time. Most Trusts will have improvement teams that are multi-professional and are familiar with the Model for Improvement, Lean, Microsystems approaches to improving quality. Increasingly the language of QI and collaborative approaches are also evident in primary care settings. All Royal Colleges have added Quality Improvement as a subject, an approach to improving care and a component of training since the publication of Training for Better Outcomes by the Academy of Royal Colleges in 2016. This half day session is designed to ensure all educational supervisors are more understanding of the context for QI, the fundamentals of how QI methods work and in particular how they differ from Audit and how best to support, encourage and supervise good quality improvement experiences for their trainees.
