Description: NHS staff have the most difficult roles because we regularly work with people who are frightened, upset and anxious and may project those feelings outwards. We are often required to give bad news. Other difficult consultations involve people with medically un-explained symptoms who may have been labelled as ‘heartsink patients’. Complex consultations such as these can generate negative feelings within us such as doubt, dread, fear, sadness and despair. As a consequence we may find ourselves leaving work feeling depleted and unable to recharge On this full day course you will learn how to manage difficult consultations in such a way that your wellbeing and the doctor-patient relationship remains intact. As a result you will consult more expertly and efficiently reducing the risk of complaints whilst re-kindling the joy of working in Medicine/Dentistry.

Description: “Mindfulness at work and in life” is a 1-day experiential course based on the 8 -week evidence-based MBSR course designed and researched by Prof Jon Kabat Zinn at Harvard. The course will cover several important aspects of mindfulness and encourage home practice to be carried out. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and linking to the reality of working in the NHS. The course is interactive with group work. We will explore the definition of mindfulness and its rationale. The day consists of meditation practices such as the sitting practice, the body scan and mindful movement. Relevant stress physiology will be discussed. We will touch upon the evidence base, the neuroscience and invite discussion to enhance learning. Mindful communication and the benefits of mindfulness in relationships will be discussed. At the end of the day, key learning points will be drawn out. There will be signposting to various mindfulness resources and tips on how to practice mindfulness at work and in your life.

Description: An exciting and engaging 2-day medical education course for trainees, delivered by experts in their field from DoctorsTraining. In the first session we will explore education theory, learning needs analysis, learning outcomes, constructive alignment and provide time for critically evaluate you own teaching plan. There will be an opportunity to look at different teaching strategies and modalities to understand the relative strengths, challenges, and opportunities to develop a full set of tools as an educator. The main focus of day 2 will be the role of an educator and supervisor of trainees, undergraduate students and members of the multi-professional team. This day will prepare senior trainees for a formal role as a clinical or educational supervisors and is aligned to the GMC’s 7 domains of trainer accreditation. The course will allow the SuppoRTT (Return to Training) team to learn about the current support available for those returning to training and any areas for improvement moving forward. The course will involve time to think and share by considering a number of questions in pairs and small groups. This includes questions about preparation for time out of training, the experience of time out of training and the challenges associated with returning to training. These issues will be considered from the point of view of the doctor in training and the educational supervisor. Your involvement will provide an opportunity for improvement of processes which we hope will improve the experience of returning to training in the future.
