Description: Imposter Syndrome or Phenomenon is defined as ‘a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evidence of success’. ‘Imposters’ suffer chronic self-doubt and are unable to internalise their accomplishments however successful they are in their field. This phenomenon is surprisingly common. It can get in the way of professional progress and job satisfaction. Because it is so common, it is helpful for trainers to be aware of it, and to understand how they might work with trainees who experience it. It is normal for trainers themselves to also experience it. This one-day interactive workshop looks at what Imposter Syndrome is, how it can sabotage trainee progress, and what tools are available to manage it. The day will include evidence-based solutions using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) techniques. ACT has a huge body of evidence behind it and an impressive pedigree in providing practical tools that are easy to grasp and use.

Our trainee cohort has changed. More of our trainees are at risk of differential attainment. You have probably already attended the Differential Attainment(DA) overview workshop which looks at why DA exists and strategies for reducing it. This workshop aims to follow on this work and provide the space to discuss past and present trainees and educational supervisees who have needed or need additional or different support. We will look at their journey, the strategies that were used, what worked well and what didn’t and provide ideas and resources to ensure that trainers can feel equipped to sustainably and successfully support their trainees on their training journey.

Description: International Medical Graduates (IMGs) make a significant and valuable contribution to the NHS. More than a third of the NHS medical workforce have had their primary medical qualification overseas. In 2021 the total number of licensed IMGs in the medical workforce was over 77 000, with IMGs making up 34% of GP trainees. The following is extracted from the recent document, “Welcoming and valuing international medical graduates – A guide to induction for IMGs recruited to the NHS” “41.9% of the NHS medical workforce are from an ethnic minority background. There is substantial evidence showing that ethnic minority staff are likely to experience racism and discrimination and may have poorer experience and progression opportunities, and that ‘the extent to which an organisation values its minority staff is a good barometer of how well patients are likely to feel cared for’.
