About the “Foundation Cases” teaching series:

Aims

This is a session covering common on-call and ward cover problems that you might be called to review as a Foundation doctor. Taught by Mr S Lawday, NiHR Academic Clinical Fellow and colorectal specialist trainee, this session aims to help you gain confidence assessing, investigating and managing stomas in patients in the SAU / ward setting. It will cover:

  • pain/sores
  • leakage
  • stoma retraction
  • prolapse
  • parastomal hernias
  • obstruction
  • electrolyte disturbance and infection
Objectives
  1. Be able to assess stoma health in a ward review or SAU setting
  2. Be aware of common problems that can occur with Stomas- pain/sores; leakage; stoma retraction; prolapse; parastomal hernias; obstruction; electrolyte disturbance and infection.
  3. How and when to escalate to the surgical registrar/consultant.
