A mix of large-group and small-group sessions, to include:

  • Experts by Experience workshop
  • Challenging consultations, conversations and situations
  • Mental State Examination, History Taking and Risk Assessment revision and practice
  • The Mental Health Act for non-psychiatrists
  • "Ask a Psychiatry Trainee" panel

Please note that attendees will need a working camera and microphone, and a private space from which to attend some of the components of the day.

Aims

To develop fundamental psychiatric skills needed by all doctors, aimed at Foundation Doctors who have not had a job in psychiatry.

The day is highly interactive, structured around cases with opportunities to practice skills in small groups settings.

Objectives
  • Be able to confidently undertake a psychiatrically-focussed history, risk assessment and mental state examination in a general medical setting.
  • Be aware of the major medico-legal frameworks (MHA, MCA) and apply these to mental-health problems that may be encountered in the general medical setting.
  • Appreciate the patient perspective and experience of the intersection of mental and physical health problems and care.
  • Recognise possible factors, including stigma, related to challenging situations and know approaches for responding to and de-escalating these.
