DescriptionThis is a study day for F2s mixing taught, group work and experiential elements to go through the processes that can happen when something goes wrong in a patient’s care. This can be a daunting process at any level of training and this day gives the opportunity to understand and experience something of the processes in a safe and supported context.
Additional information

The day will incorporate face to face group work with a facilitator at each Trust, with the lecture-based element of the day being provided virtually via MS Teams. There will also be some pre-reading to help you prepare for the day.

Please note catering is not available, so do bring your own snacks/lunch.

Aims

To enable F2s to understand the internal and external processes that take place when something has gone wrong in patient care, their role and responsibilities in those processes and the support available to them.

Objectives
  • To take foundation doctors through a simulated case where something has gone wrong and enable them to understand the roles of the clinical team, medical examiner, mortality review team, significant incident investigator, coroner and PALS service in reviewing the case.
  • To practice writing a statement for an SI investigation or coroner’s court based on patient notes
  • To have an opportunity to practice giving evidence and answering questions based on that statement.
  • To understand the purpose and process of the coroner’s court
  • To understand the information and support given to families after something has gone wrong
  • To be aware of their own support needs when involved in an investigation and how to get the right support.
