DescriptionA two-day course gaining knowledge and skills in remote and rural medicine as well as improving confidence and competence in leadership and team working that can be directly related to NHS practice. Please Note - This course is 2 days in remote location so includes an overnight stay at YHA Boswinger, Cornwall. This course is free to attendees and does include food, accommodation and tuition. It DOES NOT include transport, tea/coffee.
Additional information

The course will form a mixture of workshops, open discussion and debate and lecture format. 80% of the day will take place outdoors capitalising on outdoor learning environment. The workshops will be split into groups of 6-8 and rotate during the day. All the workshops are outdoors and practical so please bring appropriate kit. A kit list will be sent out prior to the event.

The days will be split into sections relating to practical aspects of remote medicine including: Cold environment; Mental Health, Leadership, Trauma; Medical kits and Communication

You will be signposted to online learning material relating to each of the core topics prior to the training day so you can have basic knowledge of the theory when carrying out the practical elements in the workshop.

Learning outcomes

Workshop 1: Practical – Hypothermia & cold water immersion

Intended learning outcome (ILO):

- Experience how quickly you can get cold

- Discuss the 1:10:1 rule

- Explore methods of rewarming working as a team

- Work within teams to move cold casualties safely

- Discuss team dynamics and leadership styles:

Workshop 2: Packaging casualties and medical kits.

ILO:

- Use of stretchers in remote environments

- Team working when evacuating casualties

- Importance of regular observations, documentation and communication.

- Consideration of medical kits depending on terrain, environment and distance to definitive care

Workshop 3: Practical – Leadership scenarios & setting up a shelter

ILO:

- To successfully put up a shelter in teams

- Lateral thinking of how to approach this task

- Importance of working in teams to ensure success

- Understand variety of leadership styles

- Your role as medic and a leader

Workshop 4: Trauma & Communication

ILO:

- Primary survey refresher

- CABCDE – communicating findings and decision making

- How to communicate by radio or mobile in a critical scenario

- Effective communication techniques

- Do’s and do nots or radio communication

- Other methods of comms

Workshop 5: Resilience and Mental health

ILO:

- How to prepare for working in remote environments

- Emotional kit lists – what you need other than your medical kit.

- Prevention and recognition of mental health in remote environments

- Resilience - what does this mean and how do we develop our own resilience techniques?

Workshop 6: Global health challenges and sustainability discussion

ILO:

- Discuss changes we can make on a personal and system level to achieve the SDGs

- Consider the global health challenges do we see in our daily practice

- How will climate affect human health during our working careers
