| Lecturer profile | Gavin is a specialist orthodontist currently undertaking NHS Post-CCST (consultant) training
Gavin grew up in Northern Ireland, before moving to Newcastle upon Tyne to study dentistry. He graduated with Honours and spent a few more years in the North East, working in general dental practice and a number of hospital training posts including children’s dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
He was appointed as specialty registrar in orthodontics at Leeds Dental Institute and St Luke’s Hospital, Bradford in 2013. He went on to obtain a Masters degree with distinction in 2015 and completed his specialty training in 2016. He enjoys all aspects of orthodontics, but finds joint surgical and restorative cases particularly rewarding.
Alongside clinical work, Gavin enjoys teaching and research and is involved with training undergraduates, dental care professionals and specialty trainees. He is currently running a multi-centre randomised controlled trial into orthodontic bonding and is also chair of the British Orthodontic Society Training Grades Group.
Outside work Gavin has always loved sport, these days particularly squash and running. He enjoys walking and tries to make the most of the stunning Yorkshire countryside. He is also a big fan of tennis and football, but sadly not very gifted at either!

| Lecturer profile | Rhian is a Consultant Orthodontist. She completed her BDS in Cork, graduating with honors before competing Vocational Training and a number of hospital training posts in Scotland in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Paediatric Dentistry and Periodontology.
She completed her specialist registrar training and Doctorate of Dental Science in Orthodontics in 2012. She then working as a Clinical Lecturer for the University of Liverpool while completing her consultant training in Liverpool Dental Hospital, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Aintree University Hospital.
She is currently working as an Orthodontic Consultant in Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. Her clinical interest is treating medically compromised patients and her research interests centre on teaching and assessment methods.
She is currently a member of the Consultant Orthodontic Group of the British Orthodontic Society and has previously sat on the Training Grades Group, the Specialist Advisory Committee and Specialist Advisory Board for Orthodontics of the Royal Colleges.
