DescriptionThis introductory session provides a practical overview of research and evidence-based dentistry. Participants will learn how to locate, read and interpret published research, understand different types of evidence and study designs, and begin to critically appraise research papers. The session also introduces the purpose of journal clubs and prepares participants to engage in regular evidence-based discussions throughout the Academic Foundation Programme.

Aims

To provide participants with a practical introduction to research and evidence-based practice, enabling them to confidently locate, interpret and critically evaluate published evidence, and prepare for active participation in journal clubs.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Navigate the structure of a research paper and identify key information.
  • Locate relevant published dental and clinical research using appropriate resources and search strategies.
  • Understand the hierarchy of evidence and the principles of critical appraisal.
  • Differentiate between research, audit and service evaluation.
  • Recognise common research study designs and their appropriate applications.
  • Understand the purpose and format of journal clubs and prepare for participation throughout the programme.
Learning outcomes

On completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Confidently read and interpret the key sections of a research paper.
  • Search for and identify relevant, high-quality research evidence.
  • Apply basic critical appraisal skills to assess the quality and relevance of published studies.
  • Distinguish between research, audit and service evaluation in a clinical setting.
  • Identify common quantitative and qualitative study designs and understand their strengths and limitations.
