This course has been designed for dental nurses whose dental practice is participating in the Lancashire & South Cumbria Children's Oral Health, Treatment, and Prevention Pathway

The theory section of this course will be taught online via a 3 hour webinar - Thursday 5th June, 1.30pm - 4.30pm. Failure to attend the webinar will result in you not being able to attend the 3 hour hands on clinical skills section of the course.

Aims

To equip dental nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely and effectively apply fluoride varnish under the prescription of a dentist or as part of a structured oral health programme.

Objectives
  • Discuss the Benefits of Fluoride: Explain the role of fluoride in preventing dental caries and promoting oral health.
  • Clinical Evidence: Review the scientific evidence supporting the use of fluoride varnish.
  • Dental Health and Disease: Identify common dental diseases and understand how fluoride varnish can help prevent them.
  • Contraindications and Safety: Recognise contraindications for fluoride varnish application and identify fluoride toxicity.
  • Practical Application: Demonstrate the correct technique for applying fluoride varnish.
  • Oral Health Education: Provide basic oral health advice tailored to patients' needs.
  • Patient Management: Develop skills in clinical patient management, communication, and consent.
  • Scope of Practice: Determine the legal and professional boundaries of dental nurses in fluoride varnish application.
